Defence Journalism Workshop Report

ST PAULS COLLEGE, July 1, 2024: On the occasion of Kannada Press Day, the PG Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at ST PAULS COLLEGE organized a one-day workshop on Defence Journalism. The event aimed to educate aspiring journalists on the nuances and challenges of reporting on defence and security matters, crucial for responsible journalism today.

The workshop commenced with a keynote address by Vishwanath Patil, Senior Producer at India Today, who underscored the vital role of journalists in bridging the gap between the armed forces and the public. Mr Patil also discussed the ethical challenges inherent in defence reporting. Following the address, participants delved into case studies of significant defence-related events, learning methodologies for accurate and responsible reporting under pressure.

Informal networking sessions provided attendees with the opportunity to interact with Mr. Patil, fostering professional relationships and potential collaborations. The workshop concluded with a closing ceremony, where feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees expressed gratitude for the insightful sessions and practical knowledge gained.

The workshop significantly enhanced participants’ understanding of defence reporting and inspired them to uphold journalistic integrity in their future endeavours. ST PAULS COLLEGE plans to organize similar workshops regularly to nurture a new generation of ethical and skilled defence journalists.
