Report on Role of Counselling in Juvinile Deliquency

 

On June 24, 2024, St. Paul’s College had the honor of hosting Dr. Kalpana Purushothaman, Member Magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board, for an insightful and impactful session with undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr. Purushothaman’s address aimed to sensitize the young minds to the various pressing issues in society and emphasize the importance of their roles in addressing these challenges.Dr. Purushothaman began by explaining the fundamentals of the Juvenile Justice system in India. She highlighted the primary objectives of the Juvenile Justice Board, which include the rehabilitation and reintegration of juvenile offenders into society. She also discussed the legal framework that governs juvenile justice and the importance of protecting the rights of minors.

The session shed light on several critical issues that plague society today. Dr. Purushothaman detailed problems such as child labor, human trafficking, substance abuse, and the increasing rate of juvenile delinquency. She used real-life case studies to illustrate the severity and complexity of these issues.Dr. Purushothaman emphasized how these societal issues particularly affect the youth. She discussed the psychological and social impacts on children who fall victim to these problems, highlighting the need for a supportive and rehabilitative approach rather than a punitive one.
